WHAT is Math, and why is it important?
I think we need to reflect on the beauty of what math is. It is finding patterns and seeing life from different ways. It is more then just adding, subtracting multiply and dividing, it is a way of viewing the world and translating it to something that can be understood.
It's more then we think its beyond what we see it's deep! Teachers of Math need to let students know that math is not just numbers it is more. It is all around us! That Math is the language of seeing something and finding a way to explain what we see. It is a way of seeing the world in a different set eyes. The wonder of Math has been lost in secondary school, I know that in my grade 10 math class the first question is always "Why are we learning this and when are we ever going to use it?"
We need to change how students see Math. We need to get them to really see the applications of Math and how beautiful it really is. We need to inspire them to want to learn Math. Get them to think its more radical then they think.
The biggest question is how do we do this? Well I know from first hand experience that we as teachers have a tough job, but if we can get our students to see the wonder in what we teach and the practicality of what teach, students will want to learn.
So I found the coolest YouTube video for you to use in your classrooms. It shows all the cool place we see Math in the world around us. I think that before we teach we need to inspire awe!
